Cayde Accounting & Tax Free assessment

Staying current

GST/HST filed on schedule, and backlogs cleared.

Whether you file annually or quarterly, your GST/HST is reconciled against your books and filed on time. If returns have been missed, we reconstruct what was collected and paid, claim the input tax credits your records support, and file every outstanding period.

What’s included

  • Review of your GST/HST account and filing frequency
  • Returns prepared from reconciled books
  • Input tax credits supported by your records
  • Missed periods reconstructed and filed
  • What was collected reconciled against what was remitted
  • GST/HST correspondence with CRA, where we’re authorized

Why it matters

Late GST/HST carries its own penalty.

Under the Excise Tax Act, a late return with a balance owing is charged 1% of that balance plus a quarter of a percent for each full month late, up to twelve months, before interest. Each quarter left unfiled adds another return to the pile.

How to catch up on missed GST/HST returns

How it works

  1. Review the account

With your authorization, we see every period CRA has on file: filed, missing or assessed.

  2. Reconcile

Sales and purchases are matched to your bank records so the GST/HST collected and the credits claimed are both supported.

  3. File and keep filing

Outstanding periods are filed in order, then every future return goes in on schedule.

When does a corporation have to register for GST/HST?

Once taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or over four consecutive calendar quarters, you’re no longer a small supplier and have to register. Many businesses register voluntarily before that.

How often do we have to file?

It depends on your annual taxable sales. Up to $1.5 million, annual filing is the default. From $1.5 million to $6 million it’s quarterly, and above $6 million it’s monthly. You can usually choose to file more often than required.

We collected GST/HST but never filed. What should we do?

File every missing period, oldest first. Each late return with a balance owing is charged 1% of the balance plus 0.25% for each full month late, up to twelve months, and interest compounds daily. Filing also lets you claim the input tax credits you’re entitled to, which often reduces what you owe.

Can we still claim input tax credits from past years?

Most businesses have four years to claim an input tax credit. Credits older than that are generally lost, which is one more reason not to wait.
